The Challenge

Formed in 2005, Newcastle School for Boys caters for 400 boys: the junior school comprises early years, infants and juniors catering for nursery, reception and all the way up to Year 6 while the senior school houses Years 7 to 11 and a Sixth Form. In 2015, the school engaged Calibre’s expertise to head-up a comprehensive IT review, which identified a number of requirements:
A new strategic plan that would include providing best value advice around the existing IT system, specifically looking at network and Wi-Fi improvements
A reliable, robust and secure infrastructure to drive e-Learning platforms
Senior level management support and advice provided on an on-going basis

 

 

The Solution

Calibre completed an assessment/review of the school’s IT equipment and Wi-Fi before producing a strategic plan that laid out clear priorities and recommendations for improvements, including better utilisation of existing technology and eLearning platforms.

A reliable, robust and functional new enterprise grade network constructed around Cisco Meraki and new switching technologies was also installed by Calibre. This will ensure a fit-for-purpose, safe and secure IT system is available for the next five years that will secure the existing and future e-Learning requirements of pupils, teachers and support staff campus-wide.

Phase II (currently underway) will involve the relocation of the school’s internet services with Calibre lending network support. The on-going work will see an upgrade of the network software summer 2016, before the internet service is relocated in early 2017.

 

 

The Benefits

Calibre’s infrastructure overhaul has resolved reliability issues – the network has significantly improved, while technologies are now more fit-for-purpose. Safe and secure BYOD access is significantly better, providing improved access to learning on and off the school’s premises, while improved access for remote log-on and learning is anticipated.

Improved account management is another benefit of engagement with Calibre. The availability of key people and a 24/7 help-desk has impressed alongside effective insight and the technical knowledge and expertise to address and resolve issues quickly with effective solutions and foresight.
